So, this book will be a new reading requirement for our doulas. If someone is on a scholarship, I will have one book to lend out if needed. I know this book is a bit more pricey than the other books, so we won't be able to provide it as part of any package deal - however, I think you will find it worth the price to purchase and read through it.
So, this new book is now required as of today August 6, 2026 for new doula students enrolling in postpartum doula. If you are an older student, we can waive it but we still recommend you read this book.
Also, Postpartum doula now has a certification fee for nutritional doula - we are adding in a $40 fee for this part of the class. The fee can be added on (upon request) at beginning of your course or you can wait till you are ready to graduate and pay the $40 fee at that time. We will start keeping records of who pays at the beginning. If you are on a payment plan, it might be easier to add it in as a payment at the end of your plan.
Learn about postpartum doula course here!
******************************
Renewing Certifications - New system...
Oh, another thing we will be adding in a renewal for certifications starting September 1st, 2026. Why offer a renewal system? This is because the Doula Match is evaluating certifications and giving out a point system. A certification program that has renewals for certificates are going to get more points with this system, plus it makes more sense to keep in touch more with our graduates. Also this is a requirement for Carrot and we are Carrot approved. So, the renewal system at Catholic Doula is voluntary for previous students who graduated - but will be required after September 1st for anyone finishing studies after September 1st, 2026. So, it doesn't matter when you enrolled if you are not finished by August 31st then the renewal program will be required. I will only require it once every 3 years as that is what Carrot insurance requires and since we are also Carrot approved - we also need to offer a 3 year renewal status. We will charge a $50 renewal fee for the process and you can also take a continuing education course as well from us if so desired. Catholic Postpartum Foods for Healing and Digestion
Discover gentle, nourishing postpartum foods that can support healing, digestion, energy, and breastfeeding during the sacred weeks after birth.
After welcoming a baby, a mother’s body deserves tenderness, rest, and abundant nourishment. The postpartum period is not a time to rush toward weight loss, productivity, or “getting back to normal.” It is a season of recovery—a quiet and often hidden work of healing, much like the humble, faithful care offered within the home.
As Catholic doulas, we recognize that caring for a new mother is part of honoring the dignity of her motherhood. She has poured herself out through pregnancy, labor, birth, and perhaps breastfeeding. Now she deserves to be cared for, fed well, and given the support she needs to recover in peace.
Food cannot remove every difficulty of the postpartum season, but warm, steady, nutrient-dense meals can help support a mother’s energy, digestion, mood, tissue healing, bowel regularity, and milk production. The goal is not perfection. It is to offer the body what it needs, one simple meal at a time.
Why Postpartum Nourishment Matters
Pregnancy and birth ask a great deal of a mother’s body. Labor, blood loss, hormonal changes, interrupted sleep, tissue repair, and the daily demands of caring for a newborn all affect her energy and nutritional needs. If she is breastfeeding, her body is also doing the remarkable work of producing milk while continuing to heal.
In the early weeks, many mothers find that digestion feels slower, more sensitive, or less predictable than usual. Appetite may be low, or it may feel difficult to remember to eat while caring for a baby. This is why postpartum meals should be simple, accessible, and satisfying—not complicated or restrictive.
Hydration is important, too. Water, broths, soups, herbal teas, and water-rich fruits can support digestion and help a mother feel replenished. For mothers experiencing constipation, warm and moist foods may be especially comforting and easier to tolerate than cold, dry, or heavily processed foods.
Nourishing Foods for a Mother After Birth
A postpartum plate does not need to look perfect. It simply needs to provide steady nourishment. Whenever possible, aim for a balance of protein, gentle carbohydrates, healthy fats, fiber, and fluids.
Protein for repair and strengthProtein supports tissue repair, steadier energy, and overall recovery. Helpful options include:

Eggs, chicken, turkey, beef, fish, tofu, beans, and lentils

Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, and cheese

Quinoa and nut butters

Iron-rich foods after birth
A mother may need additional iron-rich foods after the blood loss of birth, particularly if she experienced significant bleeding or has been told that her iron levels are low. Foods rich in iron include:

Beef and other red meats

Beans and lentils

Leafy green vegetables

Pumpkin seeds

Iron-fortified cereals

A healthcare provider can help determine whether iron supplementation is needed.
Healthy fats for fullness and energy
Healthy fats can make meals more satisfying and help a mother feel sustained between meals and nursing sessions. Consider:

Avocado

Olive oil and coconut oil

Nuts, seeds, and nut butters

Full-fat yogurt or dairy, if tolerated

Salmon and other low-mercury fish

Fiber and gentle carbohydrates
Fiber and carbohydrates can support bowel regularity and provide needed energy, especially when paired with protein and fat. Good choices include:

Oatmeal

Sweet potatoes and potatoes

Berries, pears, apples, and prunes

Cooked vegetables

Beans, lentils, and whole grains

Rice, sourdough bread, and whole-grain toast

Gut-supportive foods
Some mothers enjoy including foods with live cultures, especially after antibiotics or digestive upset. Yogurt with live cultures, kefir, sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, and tempeh may be helpful for some women. Introduce fermented foods gradually if digestion is sensitive.
Gentle Foods for Early Postpartum DigestionDuring the first days and weeks after birth, warm, soft, cooked meals can feel especially comforting. Soups, stews, porridges, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, rice dishes, cooked vegetables, and broths are often easier to digest than cold, dry, or highly processed foods.
There is something deeply practical and loving about a pot of soup waiting on the stove or a bowl of oatmeal brought to a mother holding her baby. These ordinary acts of care can become a beautiful expression of service within the family, parish, or community.
A simple guideline is to choose food that is:

Warm and moist

Easy to prepare or reheat

Rich in protein and healthy fat

Gentle enough to eat when tired or low in appetite

Available often enough that the mother does not have to go long hours without food

Simple Postpartum Meal Ideas
These meals are balanced, comforting, and realistic for the demands of life with a newborn:

Oatmeal with ground flaxseed, prunes, nut butter, and cinnamon

Scrambled eggs with avocado and sourdough toast

Lentil soup with vegetables, olive oil, and bread

Salmon with rice and cooked greens

Greek yogurt with berries, chia seeds, honey, and walnuts

Chicken soup with carrots, potatoes, rice or noodles, and herbs

A smoothie with yogurt, fruit, oats, nut butter, and milk

Beef stew with potatoes, carrots, and broth

Rice bowls with chicken, roasted vegetables, avocado, and olive oil

Cottage cheese with fruit, toast, and a handful of nuts

For a mother receiving visitors, a practical gift is often better than advice: bring a nourishing meal, restock her freezer, fill her water bottle, or offer to hold the baby while she eats with both hands.
What to Limit During Postpartum Recovery
This is not a season for strict rules or food guilt. A mother does not need to eat perfectly in order to heal well. If she can only manage toast, soup, fruit, or yogurt on a difficult day, that is still nourishment.
That said, some mothers feel better when they limit:

Skipping meals or severely restricting food

Large amounts of highly processed foods or added sugar

Very greasy meals that worsen bloating or discomfort

Excess caffeine, especially if it affects sleep, anxiety, or the baby’s comfort

Foods that consistently cause digestive distress for that individual mother

A postpartum mother needs enough food. She needs steady energy for healing, feeding her baby, and moving through the long days and nights of early motherhood.
Building a Simple Postpartum Plate
A nourishing meal can be as simple as combining:

Protein: eggs, chicken, yogurt, beans, fish, beef, or lentils

Gentle carbohydrates: oats, rice, potatoes, fruit, bread, or pasta

Healthy fats: avocado, olive oil, butter, nuts, seeds, or nut butter

For example, eggs with toast and avocado, chicken soup with potatoes, or yogurt with berries and seeds all offer more lasting support than a snack made up of sugar alone.
A well-fed mother is not being indulgent. She is being cared for in a season when her body is doing holy and demanding work.
When to Seek Medical SupportMany digestive changes after birth improve with time, hydration, rest, and regular nourishment. However, a mother should contact her healthcare provider for severe constipation, vomiting, significant abdominal pain, blood in the stool, inability to keep food or fluids down, or symptoms that are worsening rather than improving.
Postpartum recovery is not about bouncing back. It is about allowing a mother the time, nourishment, and support to heal. When she is fed with care—by herself, her family, her parish community, or those who love her—she is better supported to receive the grace and responsibility of motherhood, one day at a time. Beneath the surface, the digestive system is also reorganizing after months of hormonal shifts, increased abdominal pressure, and the physical stress of labor and delivery. This is one reason digestion can feel sluggish, unpredictable, or uncomfortable in the weeks and months postpartum.
Many mothers expect their bodies to bounce back quickly, but the gut does not work that way. The postpartum period is a true transition. Hormones shift rapidly, the microbiome changes, and the body must recover while adjusting to a completely new internal environment. Understanding this can help mothers feel less alarmed and more supported as they heal.
What changes after birthDuring pregnancy, the digestive system adapts to support the growing baby. Hormones like progesterone slow gut movement, the uterus takes up space in the abdomen, and the microbiome shifts to support energy storage and nutrient transfer.
After birth, the body must reverse many of these changes while also recovering from labor, blood loss, sleep deprivation, and sometimes surgery or medications. The drop in estrogen and progesterone after delivery can affect gut motility, appetite, and bowel regularity. As a result, digestion may feel inconsistent or uncomfortable for a period of time.
In other words, postpartum digestion is not just “off”—it is biologically different for a while.
Why digestion feels harder
One major factor is the sudden hormonal shift. During pregnancy, progesterone slows digestion; after birth, the body has to find a new rhythm. At the same time, the gut microbiome begins shifting back toward its pre-pregnancy state, which can temporarily affect digestion and immune function.
Other common postpartum factors can make digestion more difficult, including pain medications, iron supplements, dehydration, pelvic floor tension, fear of bowel movements after delivery, reduced physical movement, stress, and sleep deprivation.
For mothers recovering from a C-section, surgery, antibiotics, and limited mobility can make the digestive system even more sensitive.
Common symptomsConstipation is one of the most common postpartum concerns. It may be accompanied by bloating, gas, reflux, or abdominal discomfort. Some mothers also notice changes in appetite, often influenced by fatigue, stress, and hormonal shifts.
Pelvic floor strain, tearing, or hemorrhoids can also affect bowel habits, making elimination uncomfortable or incomplete.
While these symptoms can feel discouraging, they are often part of normal recovery. The gut is not failing—it is adjusting. However, symptoms that are severe, persistent, or worsening should not be ignored.
The microbiome factor
The postpartum gut is also shaped by changes in the microbiome. Pregnancy brings significant shifts in gut bacteria, and after birth, the body gradually returns toward its pre-pregnancy balance. This process takes time and is influenced by factors like sleep, stress, diet, and antibiotic exposure.
For mothers who are breastfeeding, gut health is especially meaningful, as maternal health and infant feeding are closely connected.
What supports recoveryThe postpartum gut typically responds best to gentle, consistent support rather than aggressive interventions.
Helpful approaches include:

Staying well hydrated to support bowel movement and overall recovery.

Eating fiber-rich and easily digestible foods.

Choosing warm, soft meals such as soups, oatmeal, cooked vegetables, rice, eggs, and stewed fruits.

Incorporating light movement, such as short walks, to encourage gut motility.

Warm, simple foods are often better tolerated in the early weeks, when digestion may still be sensitive.
When to seek helpWhile digestive changes are common after birth, some symptoms require medical attention. These include severe or persistent abdominal pain, heavy or ongoing rectal bleeding, vomiting or fever, no bowel movement for several days despite basic care, or symptoms that interfere with daily life.
Postpartum discomfort should not be dismissed as something a mother must simply endure. Early support can make recovery smoother and more manageable.
Supporting the mother
One of the most important aspects of postpartum care is remembering that the mother’s recovery matters. Digestive health is a meaningful part of that process.
When mothers understand that gut changes are driven by real physiological shifts—not personal failure—they are more likely to seek support and give themselves the patience they need.
The postpartum body is not broken. It is healing, reorganizing, and adapting to a new phase of life. With time, nourishment, hydration, and care, the digestive system can gradually return to balance.
One other way you can support postpartum mothers is to join our next Catholic postpartum doula fast-track class coming this fall - we will meet soon: Postpartum fast-track page!

Sources

Maternal gut microbiota in the postpartum Period: A Systematic review (PMC, 2023).

Parity influences postpartum adaptations in the maternal gut microbiota (Scientific Reports, 2025).

Postpartum Digestive Issues: Why Symptoms Don’t Go Away and What … (Plate and Canvas, 2026).

Is Postpartum Responsible For My Digestive Issues? (NB Ranberg PT, 2025).

Postpartum Digestion Changes & Gut Health Support After Birth (Viva La Vulva, 2026).

Postpartum Bloating and Digestion Changes (Needed, 2025).

Postpartum Gut Health & Your Pelvic Floor (SheFit PT).

SEO description: Learn how the gut reorganizes after birth, why digestion often becomes compromised postpartum, and what mothers can expect during digestive recovery after pregnancy and delivery.

New logo, Pricing & new mentoring add-on for students!

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/new-log-pricing-new-mentoring-add-on-for-students

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/new-log-pricing-new-mentoring-add-on-for-students#comments

Uncategorized

New logo - updated again - Mary Spanish version with baby Jesus... If you have a group of 3 or more women who want to train with our program, please contact Julie at catholicdoulaprogram@gmail.com and we will work out an affordable group rate. There will be slightly add on fee for zoom class.
In person trainings, I am going to be brining Comfort in Birth Method as its own certification program to local areas soon - students will be able to apply for Medicaid as our state has a pathway 2 that allows any certification to work with that pathway. If you are intersted in having our Catholic Doula Program or Comfort in Birth Method to your area for in person event, please contact me (Julie) at catholicdoulaprogram@gmail.com and we will see if I can fit that into my schedule for next year.
New Mentoring add on for students - we now offer a 3 month or 6 month add on for doulas in training to have mentoring - non-students may apply if I have an opening. I will only take about 2-3 students at a time as my schedule can get busy. I may look for other mentors at some point in time. The mentoring can be combined with birth and postpartum doula training as an all in one package for $1957 (includes 6 months of support). Or you may choose other options for birth or postpartum only.
Also, if you just sign up for birth and postpartum doula only combo class for $1250 - you receive one mentoring slot as an added bonus, 2-3 books and rebozo included (even for payment plans-please include shipping at checkout) as we want you to feel welcomed into our doula family.

Upcoming Fast-track programs and new things for Catholic doula, etc.

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/upcoming-fast-track-programs-and-new-things-for-catholic-doula-etc

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/upcoming-fast-track-programs-and-new-things-for-catholic-doula-etc#comments

Uncategorized

Welcome to our blog on Catholic doula program! We are hosting 2 fast-track birth and postpartum doula programs back to back over the summer. As a Catholic postpartum doula, you’re not only supporting physical recovery and nurturing families—you’re participating in God’s restorative love. Here are five heartfelt reasons to consider this rewarding vocation.
1. A Calling to Serve With Christ’s Compassion
Becoming a Catholic postpartum doula allows you to live out the Corporal Works of Mercy through acts of service, presence, and care. You accompany mothers and newborns in their most vulnerable moments, modeling Christ’s compassion in every meal prepared, diaper changed, and prayer whispered. The Catholic Doula Program emphasizes spiritual and prayerful support, so your service is intentionally rooted in Christ and the dignity of every life.
2. Supporting the Sacred Bond of Family
The postpartum season is the heart of family life, and Catholic doulas honor the Holy Family—Mary, Joseph, and Jesus—as the perfect image of love and unity. By serving parents with patience and tenderness, you help strengthen the domestic church, nurturing not just physical recovery but spiritual harmony at home. The Catholic Doula Program specifically trains you to support the family unit in a pro-life, authentically Catholic way, without diluting language or values.
3. Integrating Faith and Holistic Healing
A Catholic approach to postpartum care embraces body, mind, and soul. Prayer, sacraments, and mindful rituals—such as blessing the home or praying with a new mother—bring peace and holiness into each moment. Through the Catholic Doula Program, you learn tools like the unique SMART Mother Model, rebozo closing or belly binding, and postpartum nutritional support, so you can offer holistic, culturally sensitive, and evidence-based care that honors God’s design for a woman’s healing.
4. Building a Ministry of Presence
This vocation is deeply relational. Catholic postpartum doulas offer the ministry of presence, reminding mothers they are never alone. You bear witness to their transformation with gentleness and grace, offering listening support, space to debrief the birth, and spiritual encouragement as they navigate emotional changes and new responsibilities. With the Catholic Doula Program, you also have access to mentoring circles and community support, helping you grow in confidence as you serve families.
5. Joining a Pro-Life, Professionally Trained Community
There is a blossoming movement of Catholic women reclaiming birth and postpartum as sacred ground. The Catholic Doula Program offers a pro-life, evidence-based postpartum doula course that can even be Medicaid-approved in some states, opening doors to serve low-income and vulnerable mothers. You receive a thorough online training with the SMART Mother Model, a full postpartum manual, required readings on the first forty days and postpartum nutrition, and the opportunity for additional certification as a nutritional doula during the pilot period. You are not just “taking a class”—you’re entering a supportive community and building a ministry that beautifully blends professional skills with Catholic spirituality.
6. Offering Specialized Postpartum Nutritional Care
Nutrition is one of the most overlooked pillars of postpartum recovery, yet it profoundly affects mood, energy, milk supply, and overall healing. As a Catholic postpartum doula with additional postpartum nutritional training, you can help mothers choose warming, restorative foods, healing broths, and simple meal plans that support both body and soul.

Catholic Doula Program Postpartum doula students have the opportunity to pursue a dedicated postpartum nutritional doula certification, allowing them to deepen their knowledge of postpartum herbs, supplements, and traditional healing foods while keeping everything aligned with Catholic values. This extra layer of formation not only strengthens your confidence as a caregiver, it also sets your services apart and allows you to serve families more completely—offering spiritual support, emotional presence, and practical, faith-informed nutritional guidance all in one vocation.
We are planning on hosting our next Postpartum Doula Fast-track in April -
please join our April class!
Here's our postpartum doula main page! Click to go!
Postpartum fast-track page! click to go
Early bird of $55 off will end March 17th, 2026.

Why I don't leave social media for Lent and what you can do for Lent....

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/why-i-dont-leave-social-media-for-lent-and-what-you-can-do-for-lent

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/why-i-dont-leave-social-media-for-lent-and-what-you-can-do-for-lent#comments

Uncategorized

Welcome to our Catholic doula blog, just in case this is your first time reading, I wanted to welcome you to our blog. Now to answer, Why I do not leave social media for Lent....I don't leave because this is a good way to find clients especially if you are a doula. You are able to connect with other moms of your Faith or any mom in your area that might be seeking a doula. One way to connect is something new called "Trial Reels" on Instagram - so, you may want to look that up or just do any Reel, Post, etc. Another way is to keep a Catholic Presence in any group or your own timeline. Perhaps, you could give up the "groups" on Facebook for Lent. Also, you can be more active about talking about your Faith instead on Facebook - on your timeline. I say give up being in Facebook groups because that's where most of the fighting and stupidity is at (sorry - I had a couple of recent run ins and decided to just leave a group.) However, this is up to you; maybe you need to take the full pause and that's ok too. I find posting on my own timeline, Facebook page connected with Instagram - a good thing to continue during Lent. Let's be the light of Faith that beacons in the darkness.
What can mamas or doulas do for Lent? The idea of having to "give up" this or that sometimes makes people cringe. Let's do something different this Lent - let's be more ACTIVE to give God our BEST - so here's a list of some idea that you may want to implement this season....
1. Prayer - Praying morning offering, evening prayers (examen) - this is simple, but honestly it is not always easy to do - you get up you start doing your other morning things, the kids come in and whine they are hungry, etc. So, maybe set that clock for 15 minutes earlier to wake you up, so you can have time for morning prayers or better yet pray them with your kids!
2. Giving - Lent is a time of giving to others. Find a local Charity you would like to support throughout Lent and give them a donation or what we call "alms." If you have in your heart to help our Catholic Doula Scholarship fund, please let us know, we might be having our annual mini-conference during Lent - go to our contact page to get on our mailing list for our Lent conference. Donations can be accepted for our scholarship fund.
3. Doing Something Active - This could be more exercise in the morning or afternoon, going out for a walk once weather gets nicer, meditation in your home, helping a neighbor, etc. Get creative in this. It depends on where you live. Or just everyday things - do with "Love" as St. Therese the Little Flower would offer her everyday chores, etc.
4. Eating/Foods - Mark your calendar to remember when to fast and abstain this Lent or add in extra days. After all there are only 2 fast days for Lent- Ash Wednesday (2/18) and Good Friday (April 3rd). The other Fridays are no meat days. See if you can add on an extra no meat day or fast day if you are able too!
5. Meal planning - Do you need help with Lenten Meal ideas? Stay tuned to this blog and I plan to have a Lenten Friday Meal plan post each week (hopefully like the day before Friday.)
I hope these ideas will help you have a productive Lent and if you are staying on social media - say hi to me up there!
P.S. We are going to be offering Soulful Mama Academy for moms soon - I am still working on this class - if you want to get on the waitlist - please go here to learn more - it is an Academy to help postpartum mothers (from baby through toddler years)!

Quickie blog...on some doula trainings and more

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/quickie-blogon-some-trainings-and-more

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/quickie-blogon-some-trainings-and-more#comments

Uncategorized

Note: We have decided to take down the cross certification page as it was confusing people. We will only do cross certify or transfer from another doula course on a case by case basis and probably for one person per season. This is because we are a small program and this is like offering someone a very special discount on a class and also will be financially based as well. So, the cross certification/transfer your doula class is only going to be offered to one student seasonally. We have filled that for winter session. We will reopen this in the spring and take applications again for that opening.
Second, I apologize if my Birth shop section is confusing - if you do not know where to go to enroll for a class email me and I"ll send a special link over for payment. Email is catholicdoulaprogram@gmail.com - I usually prefer payment plan students to message me for their specific payment link.
Third, if you have life experiences, we are willing to offer a waiver of assignments on any of our classes and if you sign up for a second course while in another class - then we can offer a combo discount - even if you decide to enroll within 6 months of your first class - so keep that in mind.
We are also renaming Momento Caritas to Angelic Passage End of Life Doula course. This course will have 2 levels - we will be offering the Level 1 training to start with soon. We will also have a VIP Business bonus for free for early birds. The Level 2- that may not be available for awhile - I want to gauge interest in a higher deeper dive level that will be more deep into Catholic Teachings and more. I want to gain more experience before I offer a deeper course. So, for now I am going to say in the future we may have a Level 2. This way I can have something to offer now and a deeper insightful class in the future. The Level 1 training will be a little more open to non-Catholic Christians who may want a class that has some religious basis but not too in depth that it is too Catholic for them. I will be operating under Biblical standpoints with a spirituality section for Catholics.

Become an End of Life Doula - Momento Caritas is now open...

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/become-an-end-of-life-doula-momento-caritas-is-now-open

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/become-an-end-of-life-doula-momento-caritas-is-now-open#comments

Uncategorized

Our end of life doula course is now open https://catholicdoula.com/death-doula.html There are moments in life that feel like sacred invitations. Why is death care so important now? I think we have gone too modern - the funeral "casket" that's fancy and expensive. I remember my dad's funeral. There were pall bearers carrying this white casket to and from the church and then it was put deep into the ground on my mom's property. I remember throwing dirt onto the casket. But, did you know you can be buried a different way? You can be buried in a shroud only and have your family spare the expense of a casket all together? There are even places that encourage what we call "green burial." I was thinking about how the Mexican Rebozo Shawl can be used at birth for the mama and baby, but it also could be used at death to wrap it around the body one last time and even be buried with that family member if so desired. I want a green burial or at least as much as possible. I don't want a fancy casket, I want to be buried with a rebozo wrapped around me as part of the shroud (most likely with sheets as well.) I want herbs also surrounding my body. Have you thought about what you want for your own funeral or death? Anyway, we discuss these kinds of things in our upcoming death doula course. I think I want the first session to be intimate and a live class with some guest speakers that I hope to invite in. Anyway, I don't know exact dates when I'll get this together - I am giving myself "grace" to take time to study all of this first. Here are some valuable insights to help you succeed, which we also implement ourselves!
Website:
First and foremost, having a website is crucial; it serves as a constant presence that can reach a wider audience than word-of-mouth alone.
Pricing:
Be the expert doula. Additionally, it's important to maintain your worth and ensure a sustainable income. Instead of discounting your services, consider enhancing your offerings by adding value, such as including a free lactation class or meditation tracks. This approach not only preserves your pricing but also provides clients with more for their investment.
Relationships:
Third, prioritize building relationships over accumulating material items. Clients appreciate your undivided attention and genuine engagement more than welcome packs filled with freebies. Focus on listening and asking thoughtful questions during consultations, as this connection is what ultimately leads to securing clients.
Modern Doula - Use Technology:
In today's world, technology offers incredible resources for small businesses, so take advantage of it! There are numerous affordable tools available that can help you streamline your operations and reduce paper usage. We enjoy discussing the benefits of going paperless with fellow doulas, and our clients appreciate it too. Embracing a modern approach not only enhances your professionalism but also builds trust with families.
Routines are important:
Establishing a routine is essential for success. Personally, I dedicate my weekday mornings to sipping coffee while tackling a checklist of business tasks. Whether you prefer a daily or weekly checklist, consistency is crucial. Successful business owners typically invest at least an hour each day in administrative duties, and doula work is no exception. Discover a sustainable routine that works for you and stick to it diligently.
Goals and Intentions:
Take the time to articulate your goals and intentions. Whether you call them goals or intentions, writing them down is vital. Transform these aspirations into actionable steps that fit into your daily routine. Remember, your goals should be specific and achievable; for instance, aiming for 500 new social media followers by a set date is a clear target, unlike a vague desire to simply grow your online presence.
Gratitude - Remember to be Thankful:
Next, cultivating gratitude can significantly enhance your well-being; research indicates that regularly practicing gratitude strengthens this emotional muscle, leading to increased happiness.
Be a Spiritual Doula: Additionally, consider incorporating spiritual elements into your practice, such as prayers, the Rosary, or meditation, to prepare yourself to be the best doula you can be.
Enroll with Catholic Doula: Lastly, enrolling in a Catholic Doula Program, particularly one that focuses on Christ and Marian-centered principles, can provide you with the essential training and support you need to thrive in this rewarding field.
Schedule a call with Julie at https://calendly.com/doulajuliana or email her at catholicdoulaprogram@gmail.com

Catholic Doula Pricing change and bonus items when you enroll...

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/catholic-doula-pricing-change-and-bonus-items-when-you-enroll

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/catholic-doula-pricing-change-and-bonus-items-when-you-enroll#comments

Uncategorized

We have decided to raise our prices this fall, but we didn't want to go up too high. It is a book about St. Dymphna's life and how it touched other people. Go grab a copy if you are looking for some long reading (very long book.) The King basically had a mental illness and his wife died and he was left without her. He turned towards having another wife, but it was Dymphna who he wanted as she looked alot like his wife. But it is wrong for him to have Dymphna to be his next wife. So, Dymphna fled her father the King. The King ended up killing Dymphna in the end because she refused to be part of something so wicked and wrong. The book goes more into the insights of what happened for Dymphna's life of being on constant run all the time. It is kind of a heartbreaking story. I think her life is one for us to think about and ask if we are ever mentally running away from God? Do we have anything to hide? Or should we take the time to go to God and ask for forgiveness of any sins?
Anyway, I hope this little blog gives you something to think about. I meant to write something and forgot about writing about St. Dymphna - may she inspire us all to be better in our lives!

Misinformation and Minnesota Doula Registery...

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/misinformation-and-minnesota-doula-registery

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/misinformation-and-minnesota-doula-registery#comments

Uncategorized

It has come to my attention that there is misinformation on the Internet by various sources about the Minnesota Doula Registery. I came across a particular article that has false claims that a doula cannot bill a client without being registered with the state. This is wrong and false information. In fact, we have a student graduate of our program (Catholic Doula Program) who is billing clients and working with clients in her Catholic community that have no idea there's even a state registery! So, my aim in this blog post is to set the record straight about the Minnesota Registery of Doulas and Certifying organizations listed there.
The Minnesota Doula Registery first of all is voluntary. A doula can work in Minnesota without being registered. The state is only adding in a licensure kind of thing for doulas. You can certify or be "licensed" with the state by adding your name to the Registery of doulas. They do a background check to make sure you are not a criminal. If you want this kind of proof to clients, you could always have a background check without being state certified as well. This is just an added benefit of being certified with the state and having your name listed, so people know you passed a background check.
The Minnesota Registery has some statutes that you can read - go here to look at them - I will not be quoting directly as it is too long. Note: State saying they certfying you is not the same as a certification from an organization. This means they are verfying you are certified with an organization. https://www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/148.995
There's also this one: www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/148.996
There's also this one: www.revisor.mn.gov/statutes/cite/148.997
OK, so it is basically the state saying, "We have looked at your certificate and you are good to go with working as a doula." This does not mean you have to have this or need this. This just means you are added to the Registery of doulas which is $200 out of your pocket every 3 years.
Anyway, to ensure all our doulas from Catholic Doula Program have the opportunity to be listed in this registery, we went ahead and applied with the state of Minnesota to be one of the organizations listed there. So, our business should be up there within the next week or two as a valid certfying organization.
We do want to emphasize that the registery is voluntary and has nothing to do with Medicaid program as far as we could tell. There is misinformation saying you have to be registered and do all of this and that and take Medicaid. The above Minnesota rules do not mention Medicaid. If you wish to take Medicaid and/or bill Medicaid for your doula services, you will need to talk to the Health Department and find out more information about this. Thank you so much.
We will do more articles about various states and registeries - this is the first part in a series that we are now starting. Thanks for listening in! God Bless, Julie Larsen, Founder of Catholic Doula.

He has Risen! But go to my brethren, and say to them: I ascend to my Father and to your Father, to my God and your God." End quote
So, Jesus appears to Mary Magdalen first according to the Bible. However, a traditional way we also believed he appeared to his Mother Mary first before appearing to Mary Magdalen. You have to remember not everything is mentioned in the Bible - but either way - it is nice to know that he cared about the women of the Bible too.
Why does Jesus care to show Himself to Mary Magdalen - a complete sinner who converted before anyone else? I think it is because she never denied Him. She was a faithful servant. He wanted to give consolation and hope of the Resurrection to those who loved Him and were dear to Him - His Mother Mary and Mary Magdalen.
We can be the Magdalen of the Cross and Jesus in this scene! We can say "Master" with Mary Magdalen. We can say "we give our hearts to you."
Now, go out and tell everyone the good news - Jesus is Risen! What is typical things that we do during Lent? 1. Pray. Our first thing we do more is pray more. We could go to Stations of the Cross on Fridays (or pray them at home.) We could pray the Rosary more if we have not been doing so. The Rosary is what Our Lady wants us to pray. Non-Catholics may pray the Rosary too. 2. Fast or Abstain - This is a penance that is not easy for some. Fasting is not easy, but can be done by not eating till noon for instance and then eat 2 meals for the other part of the day. Abstaining from meat on Fridays as God calls us to do. We can eat fish. Choose extra days to abstain from meat besides Friday is also another thing you can do during Lent - like do Wednesdays or Saturdays. 3. Final thing we usually do is almsgiving during Lent. How can we do almsgiving? If one does not have a lot of money, you can give your talents by doing community work, helping out at a pregnancy crisis center (pro-life centered) to help other women who are suffering and are scared of a pregnancy they did not plan, by doing other acts of service as doulas. If you do want to offer almsgiving - funds to various organizations, make sure your beliefs align with that organization. For instance we do not want to give to Planned Parenthood. We would rather give to Catholic organizations.
At Catholic Doula Program, we would love to accept donations towards our doula scholarship fund, so we can offer discounts or full scholarships to women who need it. If you would like to donate to our fund, please contact Julie at catholicdoulaprogram@gmail.com. If you want to sponsor one particular lady to become a doula - please let us know - minimum donation for a full scholarship is $455 and ANY donation will go towards partial scholarships. Note: We do not at this time have a non-profit status - but we can still offer you a receipt for your donation. We would love to make a non-profit specifically in the future. Non-profits cost a lot to get started.
Anyway, thank you for reading our blog and we hope this will help your Lenten Resolutions - make ones that you can keep! --Julie Larsen

Handmaiden Doula...

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/handmaiden-doula

https://www.catholicdoula.com/blog/handmaiden-doula#comments

Uncategorized

Hi, I was looking through one of my booklets and I had signed it "Handmaiden doula."I love this title because Our Lady called herself "I am the Handmade of the Lord...." Thus were the Jews under the Mosaic Law. They had in view the patrimony of the New Law, but they were subject to the rites and prescriptions of the old alliance, which was rudimentary and concerned itself above all with the passing needs of this world. The Son of God, however, was made man, being born of a woman, and submitted Himself to the servitude of the law, in order to raise us to the dignity of sons of God and deliver us from the slavery of the law. As a pledge of this divine filiation, God the Father has given us, the Holy Spirit, which is the Spirit of His Son, so that becoming sons of God, with Jesus, we are together with Him heirs of the eternal riches. Upon the advent of the Messianic time the Mosaic Law ceases to be, and thus commences the majority, the coming of age, of the people of God to which we belong by baptism.
Gospel (Luke 2:33-40) This Gospel is the continuation of that for the feast of the Purification. The old man Simeon and the prophetess Anna, more than 80 years old, who passed her days in the Temple, give witness of Jesus. He it is, Who is the Messiah, and His coming implies of necessity, either a separation or a judgment. The secret thoughts of each man in relation to Christ will be revealed on the last day, since He will search the reins of our hearts. Those who, either from pride or cowardice, have rejected the Son of God, will be in their turn rejected by Him, and those who have welcomed Him, will participate in His glory, because it is to save His people that Jesus came. I have had 2 requests already for a mini-spiritual program for doulas who are already in training with someone else. So, we are most likely going to offer some kind of mini-doula spiritual class in the near future. We are also going to offer a new transfer your doula certification (or cross-certification) class to those who may have stumbled upon our class after you registered somewhere else and want to be able to have the full experience! We want to give you a price break from our regular course - so for $299 you can transfer over or cross-certify and we will be putting up a page on more information on how that works. That will be available for birth or postpartum doula classes. I plan to have a once a month zoom meeting day available for transfer or cross-certifying students. January 18th is the day I have chosen for January. So, if you are interested in doing this, message catholicdoulaprogram@gmail.com and I'll get you started on this. I plan to setup info after Christmas.
Our new fast-track doula postpartum doula course is now open - you can read about that here.
OK, God Bless, we will post another blog soon. And possibly shock. Yet this is the history of the saintly mother of the Martin family, who gave her life for her children even until the very end. She was born in 1831 in France, and was the second of three children. Her parents, while they were strict, raised her and her siblings with a strong faith. They sent Zélie and her sister to the school of The Perpetual Adoration Sisters, where Zélie excelled in her studies and cultivated a deeper religious devotion. Throughout her childhood, Zélie struggled with severe headaches and respiratory problems. She desired to give herself totally to God and enter religious life, but was forced to abandon that dream when she was prevented from entering the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul due to her health issues.
Although she never lost the attraction to religious life, she was inspired with a new maternal mission; to bear many children and nurture them to be saints. If she herself could not be consecrated to God, then she decided she would consecrate all her children to Him. Through Our Lady’s guidance, she decided to become a lace maker, and in perfecting her craft she became one of the best in the business. Her dreams of raising a family became very real when she noticed a man crossing the Bridge of St. Leonard and heard a voice say in the silence of her heart, “This is he whom I have prepared for you.” This was, quite literally, a match made in Heaven. The man was the watchmaker Louis Martin, who, like Zélie, believed his life would be spend serving God in a cloistered monastery. Their connection was immediate, and they were married shortly after their first meeting.
On Motherhood: “Above all, during the months immediately preceding the birth of her child, the mother should keep close to God, of whom the infant she bears within her is the image, the handiwork, the gift and the child. She should be for her offspring, as it were, a temple, a sanctuary, an altar, a tabernacle. In short, her life should be, so to speak, the life of a living sacrament, a sacrament in act, burying herself in the bosom of that God who has so truly instituted it and hallowed it, so that there she may draw that energy, that enlightening, that natural and supernatural beauty which He wills, and wills precisely by her means, to impart to the child she bears and to be born of her.”
Zélie and Louis had nine children over the course of thirteen years, though only five daughters would survive childhood. Their rich family environment created a firm foundation for their daughters, Pauline, Marie, Céline, Léonie, and Thérèse, who would all later enter religious life. The Martins were loving but firm in how they raised their children; after all, they were determined to make them into saints.
Zélie lived her maternity with every fiber of her being. “When we had our children, our ideas changed somewhat” she once said. “Thenceforward we lived only for them; they made all our happiness and we would never have found it save in them. In fact, nothing any longer cost us anything; the world was no longer a burden to us. As for me, my children were my great compensation, so that I wished to have many in order to bring them up for Heaven.” In 1877, Zélie died of breast cancer, leaving behind her husband and five daughters; her youngest, Thérèse, was only four years old. After her death, Pauline, Marie, Thérèse, and Céline entered Carmel and Léonie became a Visitation Sister. Zélie and Louis were declared Venerable in 1994 by Pope John Paul II, and were later beatified in in 2008 by Pope Benedict XVI. Their canonization is set for October 15th, 2015. St. Thérèse, “The Little Flower” was canonized in 1925, and her sister Léonie’s cause for beatification was officially opened in July of 2015.
Feast Day: July 12 Source: https://giveninstitute.com/st-zelie-guerin-martin/ https://aleteia.org/2021/07/11/9-quotes-from-st-zelie-martin-the-little-flowers-mom

Harping doula! I bought myself a harp!! Yeah!! I know that is kind of an unusual instrument! I have played harp in the past, and I decided I wanted to play again. I got this beautiful 34-string harp from Dan Speer at Sherwed Fox Harps (previously Argent Fox).
So, how can I incorporate harp with doula work? I am actually working on a death doula certification and I may decide to play harp for dying, ill, or at funerals. I could possibly see playing the harp for babies as well! So, it is definitely something I could consider working with families and playing music for them.
Do you play an instrument? Do you think there's a way you can incorporate an instrument into your doula business? Think about it!!
Ok, talking about business, we are offering a free doula business webinar masterclass on Saturday October 5th at 2 pm central - grab your seat before they get filled. I am also giving away a couple of books when you come to it!! Go here to signup for our doula business masterclass!
Updates to website coming and curriculum and other fast-track classes:
So, we have decided to take a break from most of our fast-track zoom classes for the rest of the year as the timing of them has not worked out and we will continue with self-paced options for now. Our Magnificat Holistic Woman's Health class will be the only major class that will meet live and that one is a monthly meeting! We will still host rebozo workshops. I think we will be rolling out a new way of doing fast-track in near future - with pre-recorded class content and hosting a weekly mentoring call or something like that for a certain frame of time. To be announced!
Postpartum doula course is getting a facelift with new addition of a nutritional postpartum section. I am working on final touches of "Cocooned Care: A SMART doula's blueprint for new families" which is the title of our new manual for the course. I am still considering who to print with options - I may just do lulu press as I want this manual to be for students only. Or I may find a local printer! Students can always opt-in to print themselves too. See our Postpartum course page for more information!
Final piece of news: I have had to redo our student policies. All students as of 9/28/2024 who enroll will only have 3 days to view our terms and conditions and sign our student contract/agreement form - please see full policies page here. Anyone who enrolled previous will be under their terms that they signed up with. This blog post aims to educate expectant parents and doulas on the benefits and
uses of the rebozo during pregnancy and labor. As the birth community increasingly looks to
traditional methods for holistic care, understanding the rebozo's role can enrich the birth
experience for many families.
The Cultural Significance of the Rebozo
For centuries, the Mexican rebozo has been worn by women throughout their pregnancies and
the postpartum period. These handwoven fabrics were originally made with spun wool or cotton.
Today, rebozos are brightly colored, intricately woven shawls made of interwoven silk and linen.
Their uses vary, from carrying new babies in a sling-like fashion to being worn as a garment to
protect from the sun. An authentic rebozo is hand-made in Mexico and is usually 5-7 feet long.
In some Mexican families, they are passed along from woman to woman as an heirloom through
multiple generations. The rebozo is an iconic symbol of Hispanic femininity and motherhood,
and a reminder of the rich history of this community. Register for our special rebozo classes!
Rebozo As Story...
The rebozo is not just a piece of fabric; it carries stories, traditions, and the spirit of the women
who use it. Each rebozo is unique, often reflecting the personal and regional identities of its
weaver. The art of weaving rebozos is a cherished skill passed down through generations,
preserving the cultural heritage and craftsmanship of Mexican communities. In the context of
pregnancy and childbirth, the rebozo symbolizes the support and care that women have provided
each other for centuries, embodying a sense of continuity and connection to the past.
What is a Rebozo?
Traditionally, rebozos are used to carry goods, protect from the sun, or as a decorative garb.
During pregnancy and labor, the shawl can be used to hold the weight of the lower abdomen,
provide counter pressure to the hips and pelvis, or siphon warmth when heavy bursts of
hormones cause the chills.
The versatility of the rebozo extends to various aspects of daily life. In addition to its practical
uses, it serves as a symbol of identity and cultural pride. Women wear rebozos during important
ceremonies and festivals, highlighting their significance in Mexican culture. The rebozo’s
multifunctionality makes it an indispensable tool for women, offering both practical benefits and
emotional comfort.
Go to our Rebozo Page!
The Rebozo in Pregnancy
The rebozo can bring comfort and support through varying stages of pregnancy. Techniques like
"rebozo sifting" help alleviate back pain and promote relaxation. The gentle rocking motion
created by the rebozo can also help in repositioning the baby and reducing tension in the
mother's body. Additionally, the rebozo can support the pregnant belly, reducing strain on the
back and helping to distribute weight more evenly, which can be especially beneficial in the later
stages of pregnancy. Moms are more than welcome to take our courses (go here for info).
Expectant mothers often experience discomfort and strain as their bodies adjust to the growing
baby. The rebozo can be used to create a hammock-like support for the belly, relieving pressure
on the back and hips. This support can improve posture and reduce common pregnancy-related
aches and pains. Moreover, the soothing, rhythmic movements facilitated by the rebozo can help
expectant mothers relax, promoting a sense of calm and well-being.
The Rebozo in Labor
In labor, the rebozo offers multiple benefits. Techniques such as rebozo sifting and hip squeezing
can aid in pain relief and help with optimal baby positioning. Many mothers have found these
techniques to be a source of comfort and support during the challenging moments of labor. The
rebozo can also be used to apply gentle pressure to various parts of the body, which can help to
ease contractions and provide a soothing sensation during labor.
Labor can be an intense and demanding experience. The rebozo’s versatility allows it to be used
in various positions to support the laboring mother. For instance, the rebozo can be wrapped
around the mother's hips, allowing the doula or partner to apply counterpressure during
contractions. This technique can significantly reduce pain and discomfort, providing
much-needed relief. Additionally, the rebozo can be used to help the mother change positions
easily, promoting movement and flexibility, which are beneficial for labor progression.
The Role of the Doula
Doulas trained in rebozo techniques can offer valuable support to mothers. Proper training
ensures that these techniques are used safely and effectively. Doulas can incorporate the rebozo
into their practice to help manage pain, facilitate better baby positioning, and provide emotional
support. Training in rebozo techniques typically includes understanding the cultural significance
of the rebozo, learning various rebozo techniques, and practicing these techniques to ensure they
are performed correctly and safely.
A doula’s role is to provide continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to the
birthing mother. The rebozo enhances this support by offering additional tools and techniques
that can be customized to the mother’s needs. Doulas who are proficient in rebozo techniques
can create a more personalized and effective birthing experience, addressing the unique
challenges and preferences of each mother. This expertise also allows doulas to educate and
empower mothers, giving them confidence and reassurance during pregnancy and labor.
Doulas if you are reading this - register here for our upcoming online workshop.
What is Rebozo Sifting?
Sometimes, babies have a mind of their own and won't be settled in the optimum position for
labor (head down, facing toward your back). A doula or midwife (consult your medical team)
may perform “rebozo sifting” to gently reposition your baby. While on your hands and knees,
your doula will wrap the rebozo around your belly; this may be on an incline, like a birth ball or
couch. Using jiggling and swaying movements, your doula will “sift” your body from side to
side. During this activity, make sure you’re comfortable and hydrated! Use pillows to prop
yourself up and relieve some pressure.
Rebozo sifting, also known as "manteada," is particularly useful for helping babies move into a
more favorable position for birth. The gentle, rhythmic motion created by the rebozo can
encourage the baby to adjust their position, potentially making labor smoother and more
efficient. This technique can also be beneficial for relieving tension in the mother’s body,
promoting relaxation, and reducing stress. It’s important to perform rebozo sifting under the
guidance of a trained professional to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Using the Rebozo Postpartum
While recovering from delivery, whether vaginally or via C-section, the rebozo may be used as a
belly band/wrap to help the uterus contract. This contraction of the uterus is important in the
production of oxytocin, a chemical that helps you bond with your baby and tells your breasts to
produce milk. The rebozo, with guidance from baby-wearing professionals, can also be used as a
baby carrier. Baby-wearing is a great way to bond with an infant, create a sleep and feeding
schedule, and regulate hormones after delivery. The rebozo's versatility extends beyond
childbirth, offering comfort and support during the postpartum period and facilitating close
contact between mother and baby.
Postpartum recovery is a crucial time for new mothers. Using the rebozo as a belly wrap can help
support the abdominal muscles and aid in the healing process. This support can also alleviate
discomfort and improve mobility, making it easier for new mothers to care for their babies.
Additionally, using the rebozo for baby-wearing fosters a close physical connection, promoting
bonding and emotional well-being. Baby-wearing can also help regulate the baby’s body
temperature, heart rate, and breathing, contributing to their overall health and development.
The Growing Popularity of Rebozos in the Doula Community
The rebozo is becoming an essential tool in the doula community. Its versatility and effectiveness
in providing comfort and support during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum have made it a
popular choice among doulas. The increasing interest in traditional and holistic practices in
childbirth has also contributed to the rebozo's rising popularity. Doulas and midwives are
recognizing the value of incorporating the rebozo into their practice to enhance the birth
experience for their clients.
As more doulas become trained in rebozo techniques, they are sharing their positive experiences
and success stories with their clients and colleagues. This growing body of evidence supports the
rebozo’s effectiveness in improving birth outcomes and maternal satisfaction. The rebozo’s
integration into modern doula practice represents a blending of traditional wisdom with
contemporary care, offering a holistic approach to childbirth that respects and honors cultural
heritage.
Our Rebozo Courses (Page is here)
Julie Arreguin-Larsen comes from a Hispanic family with rich, deep-rooted ties to traditional
medicine and practices.
