What's the B.L.O.O.M. Program? It means "Bettering Lives of Outstanding Moms" The information below is for Pregnancy B.L.O.O.M. ~ Scroll down below this for Postpartum B.L.O.O.M. Thank you.
What is your MIssion STatement for B.L.O.O.M.?
A: To help mothers during pregnancy and post-partum phase with support meetings. We also provide training for "Bettering Lives of Outstanding Moms" (B.L.O.O.M.) leaders. This is a non-denominational program. We are 100% pro-life and will not support abortion in any way. We provide information about Natural Family Planning, how to start a community based leadership program (we use a great book on how to get started -- can also be used for our postpartum B.L.O.O.M.) We would like to become a non-profit in the future. That plan may take some time - in the meantime we try to provide guidelines for leaders to follow.
What is Pregnancy B.L.O.O.M?
A: Pregnancy B.L.O.O.M. is meant to offer support meetings for pregnant mothers and "new postpartum mothers". We prefer that the meetings are for pregnant mostly up to 6 weeks postpartum. We also have a postpartum leadership training for postpartum mothers; however, if you do not have any postpartum leaders -- we will allow you to continue the support a little longer as needed. Our aim is to help low income moms as much as possible; but any "target audience" for your community is great.
What kinds of things do I do at the Meetings as a leader?
She listens to mothers needs
She gives suggestions to help (note: no medical advice allowed)
She has a resource list for mothers to look at.
She encourages mothers to voice their fears and frustrations
She helps women "Trust Birth" and the natural process of birthing
She leads monthly (or at least 6 times a year) B.L.O.O.M. meetings
She goes to Labor and Delivery Tours with her B.L.O.O.M. moms.
She helps women in the community who need a little extra help during pregnancy. (Such as referring them to workforce, St. Gabriel Project, Crisis Pregnancy centers, etc.)
She offers up to 6-12 weeks support after birth in the postpartum phase. (If there's a Postpartum B.L.O.O.M. leader or group; we refer a mother to those meetings). Postpartum mothers are welcome at all Pregnancy meetings if there is not a Postpartum group nearby.
There is an additional option now to become an "Angel Leader" kind of like St. Gabriel Project and you can help a mother one-on-one for a time frame you set as an Angel Leader. If you do all projects in modules, you will earn "your angel wings" so to speak and we will send you a special Angel B.L.O.O.M. Pin or Badge (we are going to design something for this).
What Books are required for the Course? (Pregnancy B.L.O.O.M. list below)
Book List: 1.*Community Support for New Families: Guide to Organizing a Postpartum Parent Support Network in Your Community --this book is used for this Pregnancy B.L.O.O.M. as well as Postpartum B.L.O.O.M. -- see below for more on that program. 2.**“Christ Centered Childbirth" by Kelly Townsend (New add on for 2017) 3. A Catholic Mother’s Companion to Pregnancy (also required for Birth Doula) by Sarah Reinhard (also required as part of Birth Doula Program). 4. ***Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Laws for Nursing Mothers (We had used this in the past -- we are bringing it back). We are not going to do aromatherapy with this course; but we will be offering an Aromatherapy Mini-Course that will count for CEU's in the near future. Older students maybe grandfathered out of any extra books and follow the course with the books that they previous purchased. Thank you.
Is this Course self-Paced? How long will it take me to do?
Yes, B.L.O.O.M. is self-paced. You can most likely finish it within a few months. We encourage you to work through it while doing the birth course; but you may do after you finish the birth course as well. The St. Anne Breastfeeding Course is required for our breastfeeding certificate; however if you choose to do the full B.L.O.O.M. before you certify and you have not done the St. Anne course we can consider waiving the St. Anne portion -- as long as you do the book review of "Making More Milk" -- so please discuss this with us. We really want B.L.O.O.M. leadership and that is why we would consider waiving the St. Anne course. Thanks so much. Note: We now have a required reading of the program for all new students -- this is kind of like auditing the course -- you do not have to purchase the books if you are "auditing" it. However, we hope that after reading some of it that you may decide to jump in and become a leader. If you are auditing the course, you will be required to at least write a summary of some of what you learned, so we know you did read through it. Thank you.
Can a Non-Doula TAke the B.L.O.O.M. or W.O.M.B. courses?
Yes, is our short answer. However, we will need to charge $75 fee for each course. If you wish to combine 2 or more courses -- we can give a discount for doing so; please use contact us page and tell us which training you want to take. Thank you so much! Please scroll down to read about Postpartum B.L.O.O.M. Also, we are planning in person hybrid courses at some point. We are joining "The Guiding Star Project" and will be in the future offering in person training for B.L.O.O.M. for lay persons or other doulas who have not trained with Catholic Doula Program. So, the training will also include an Academy where you finish up requirements after participating in a workshop. We will have special Academy training manual (simliar to our current B.L.O.O.M.) but will be less things to do since you already did an in person workshop. All of those who go to an in person workshop are considered "Transitional Leaders" and may start up a B.L.O.O.M. group and these leaders must finish the Academy in order to be fully Certified Leaders (one year from workshop date) or re-take a second workshop (pay second workshop fee) and then become fully certified at the second workshop. Thank you.
What is the difference between Pregnancy and Postpartum BLOOM?
The focus on the training is different. We focus on pregnancy issues and running pregnant moms support with our pregnancy BLOOM. Our Postpartum BLOOM focuses on postpartum issues (postpartum depression), breastfeeding, etc. and running meetings that support breastfeeding mothers, etc. We believe both trainings are great to learn about.
What does a Postpartum BLOOM Leader do?
A Postpartum BLOOM Leader does: *Active Listening and Feedback *Works on helping mothers find resources *Helps mothers with breastfeeding issues or refers to a lactation consultant when necessary *Helps mothers know the symptoms of postpartum depression and offer natural tips and referrals. *Helps mothers work on going back to work while still breastfeeding -- tips on how to do this. *Helps with any issues related to the postpartum phase. *We allow moms to come to meetings up to 2 years postpartum.
Is it Self-Paced? Can my Friend take the course? Books?
Yes, it is self=paced. Yes, your friend can pay $75 and take the course. Book list is located with the Postpartum Book information. Thank you.
